Contractor Responds to Milwaukee, Southeast Wisconsin Tornados & Wind Roof Damage on October 12, 2022

Commercial Roofing & Restoration

Disaster Response Team

Oct 13, 2022

A barrage of tornados ripped through Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin, and emergency roof repair and inspection professionals are working with impacted property owners. Commercial roof inspection services and repairs are critical following high-wind incidents and tornados that tear off shingles and panels. RestoreMaster has contractors available at the roof repair office in Appleton, WI.

“The tornado touched down in West Allis, six and a half miles from Milwaukee. From there, it traveled three miles in just ten minutes before dissipating a few miles outside downtown,” according to Outdoors. “On Wednesday, three other small twisters also made contact near Burlington, Wis., which is about 11 miles from Milwaukee; Nashotah, Wis., which sits about 30 miles west of the city; and Lake Geneva, Wis., which is 50 miles to the southwest.”

Wind speeds reportedly reached 75 mph, and commercial property owners are advised to request a complimentary roof inspection. High winds typically loosen roofing panels, tear away shingles, and compromise flat roofing systems. Even when tornadoes do not leave immediate roof leaks, the vacuum force impugns the integrity of flashing, sealants, panels, and flat rubber materials.

A local map of the tornado wreckage in Milwaukee and Southeast Wisconsin shows a gray patch south of Milwaukee where high winds ripped across residential neighborhoods and business districts. The multiple black lines strewn across Southeast Wisconsin are where twisters touched down and tore a path. Cities and towns suffered tornado and wind roof damage in counties that include Milwaukee, Waukesha, Walworth, and Racine.

Wind & Tornado Damage Map - Milwaukee, Southeast Wisconsin 10/12/2022

Social media posts about the Milwaukee tornado and related storms:

The National Weather Service high wind, tornado, and hail roof damage map for Wednesday, Oct. 12th, shows extreme storms across Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky, as well as concentrations in Georgia and Southeast Wisconsin. There were 12 tornados, 92 high wind incidents, and 51 hailstorms over 24 hours. Reports indicate Milwaukee and other Southeast Wisconsin counties sustained the following.

  • Milwaukee County: Peak wind speeds exceeded 75 mph as metal roof panels peeled off agricultural buildings. Brown Deer and West Allis saw tornados cut paths near residential and business districts. Large tree limbs were snapped near Metro Milwaukee, and wind roof damage reports of missing shingles were fielded. A mature tree was downed in West Allis, blocking 65th and Cleveland Ave, as well as Hayes Ave.
  • Racine County: Twisters touched down in Franksville and Burlington, driving 65 mph winds. Wide-reaching structural damage to commercial buildings was reported. Images of an agricultural building’s roof torn off trended on social media.
  • Walworth County: Lake Geneva, Elkhorn, and Whitewater all suffered tornado and wind damage as debris littered the areas when funnel clouds lofted. Winds of 65 mph were recorded as debris pelted siding, gutters, and roofing systems. In Delavan, an uprooted tree landed on a house.
  • Waukesha County: Pewaukee and Nashotah saw funnel clouds touch down. Large trees were toppled in Brookfield, Merton, Okauchee Lake, and Oconomowoc.

More than 20,000 residential and commercial buildings lost power, leaving many without climate control protections against mold growths. A commercial roof inspection, followed by repairs, can prevent unnecessary water damage and health hazards. Intense straight-line winds and the sucking force from twisters are a perfect storm for roof damage.

RestoreMaster contractors and commercial roof inspection services specialists were in Milwaukee and Southern Wisconsin to support property owners’ wind and roof hail damage insurance claims on June 13, 2022.

Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems.

Older roofs are susceptible to severe wind damage, by winds as low as 50 mph.

Roof damage can be severe or mild, depending on various factors which include: materials used on the roof, impact of debris, building height and proximity to other buildings, age, angle and shape of the roof and type of roofing.

After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system.

If roof leaks do occur, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can stop leaks with tarping or shrink wrapping, where affected areas (or the entire roof) are covered with a durable shrink-wrapped plastic membrane till permanent repairs can take place. That way you can prevent mold growth from water intrusion.

Rather than believing your roof is not damaged, if your property is anywhere in the area of the storm damage map, then you will want to get your roof inspected.

Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately.

And insurance companies sometimes enforce deadlines for claims, so you need to get your claim filed quickly.
