Contractor Team Dispatched To Repair Roof Hail Damage, in Maryland & Delaware Area, On May 16, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Hail “almost as big as we ever see in the Washington region”, according to Washington Post. Usually, that area sees pea-size hail, but this storm broke out hailstones the size of teacups, close to three-inches in diameter. They dropped in Maryland, hitting northern Calvert County, near Chesapeake Beach. It then headed across the bay and hit east Cambridge in Dorchester County.
This size hail is sure to damage buildings: breaking roofing tiles and shingles, ripping at siding, chipping off paint, destroying gutters and breaking windows. RestoreMaster arrived to help with assessment and insurance reporting. Due to the scope of this storm, there will be many insurance claims, so the team will advise property owners on insurance reporting to help them receive the best coverage possible.
On the local hail and wind storm map, larger yellow patches indicate hail up to 1”, at the western and northern areas of the storm. The overlap of gray near the DC area indicates that not only was there hail but also winds up to 70 miles per hour.
One-inch hail driven by wind at up to 70 mph can cause damage but it is often difficult to see with the untrained eye. The wind-driven teacup-size hail will cause significant damage, letting water under shingles and behind siding, even into homes and buildings where windows were broken or cracked.

NOAA’s National Weather Service storm and damage map for May 16, 2022 indicates large hail, and trees and powerlines down due to heavy winds:
- Sycamore: Hen-egg-size hail reported.
- Millville: 1-inch tree limbs broken, shingles blown off.
- Huntingtown: Hail greater than 2 inches in diameter.
- Mount Harmony: Tree down blocking Skinners Turn Rd. and Emmerson Rd.

Other areas of the country were hit with the same size hail within days of each other, such as Okema and Wetumka, Oklahoma where hail up to 4.5 inches dropped. The RestoreMaster restoration contractor team would like to be sure property owners know that water removal should be top priority after storms that drop large hail with driving wind. They provide shrink wrapping of roofs or tarps, and other means to temporarily protect buildings until more permanent solutions can be implemented.
Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems.
Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged.
Roof damage can be severe or mild, depending on various factors which include: materials used on the roof, impact of debris, building height and proximity to other buildings, age, angle and shape of the roof and type of roofing.
Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind.
If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
Rather than believing your roof is not damaged, if your property is anywhere in the area of the storm damage map, then you will want to get your roof inspected.
Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.
And insurance companies sometimes enforce deadlines for claims, so you need to get your claim filed quickly.
