Emergency Contractors Arrive In Santa Teresa, NM & El Paso, TX After Hail Destroys Roofs, April 26, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Residents of Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas were rudely awakened by heavy hailstones pummeling their homes. A farmer and rancher, Jim Jordan said he awakened to the sound of hail pounding on his roof. He said, “it sounded like people on top of my roof banging on it with a baseball bat”. People who depend on greenhouses and crops, as well as home and business owners, had to face the mess the next day: clean up, do emergency remediation and bring in a lot of help. Their livelihoods depend on greenhouses to keep their plants cool in the blistering New Mexico heat, as well as keeping their homes and barns cool. RestoreMaster experts arrived in time to assist with all these details, and help to assess the damage and report it to residents’ and business owners’ insurance companies.
An area hail map indicating the storm straddling the New Mexico and Texas border indicates hail up to 1" on the edge of the storm (yellow) with hail reaching nearly 2 inches (orange) in the center of the storm. One-inch hail can cause a good deal of damage to roofs and sidings, but when it gets near 2 inches and larger it can create significant damage. Texas and New Mexico were not the only areas affected by storms this day, Waynesboro, VA and surrounding areas were also hit with severe hail and a tornado.
News centers and residents post images and videos of the storm and its aftermath, on social media:

RestoreMaster urges home and business owners to practice the utmost caution if doing roof inspections, being sure the ladder is in top working condition as well as wearing the correct type of shoes, soft-sole, or roofing boots. Bring chalk to mark damaged areas and a camera to take pictures for the insurance claim. A ground inspection can give an idea of how much damage might be on the roof, for example, dented gutters, and downspouts. Dents, dings, and other impact marks on siding and windowsills/casings may also indicate roof tile damage. Clearly, if these areas are damaged then it is highly unlikely the roof came out unscathed. RestoreMaster has experts with the training and skills to quickly and safely assess roof damage as well as provide assistance with insurance companies, emergency remediation, and final repairs.
Some roofing systems can be severely harmed by damage from heavy winds, tornadoes, or hail.
Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds.
Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.
After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system.
Circumstances do not always allow for immediate repair of roof leaks. In the meantime, an experienced disaster roofing contractor can cover the roof or affected area with a tarp or with a durable plastic shrink wrap material, until such a time when more permanent repairs can be made. We need to stop more moisture damage, so we can prevent mold growth.
Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map.
Symptoms of storm damage problems do not always show up immediately.
And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
