May 13, 2022

More than 500 storms ripped through the Midwest on Thursday, May 12th, battering St. Cloud, Minnesota, rooftops with hailstones, downing trees, and flipping over semi-trucks on I-94 before drowning the region in record-setting rainfall.

Stearns County and other municipalities were hard at work trying to restore power and assess widespread wind and hail damage to roofing systems. Emergency roofing services are critical to take roof leak repair action before heavy rains inflict further property damage. RestoreMaster alerted commercial roof repair field teams to respond in real-time to troubled building owners who sustained wind and hail property damage losses.

“Two-inch hail, winds, and torrential rains were reported Thursday afternoon,” KNSI radio in St. Cloud reported. “KNSI received numerous reports of road flooding, including Pinecone Road in Sartell, Veterans Drive near 33rd Avenue North, and 9th/10th Avenue under Highway 23 near downtown St. Cloud. Between Wednesday and Thursday, the St. Cloud area received at least 3.64 inched of rain.”

“Multiple trees were reportedly uprooted in Meeker County and around the Sartell area. Trees and powerlines were also reported down in Rice and Pierz. Tree damage was also reported on the south side of St. Cloud. Roughly 4,000 people are without power as of Friday morning,” KNSI radio reported. “A trained spotter reported a funnel cloud three miles west of Veterans Drive and County Road 120.”

Multiple tractor-trailers lay on their side in Alexandria and along Highway 23 near Paynesville. The high winds and reported twister doled out some of the worst storm property damage to counties such as Stearns, Douglas, Benton, and Todd. A local high wind and hail damage map shows a lengthy ice storm stretching from Cold Springs east across I-35 and smaller fronts hovering over communities such as Little Falls.

The yellow storm mapping indicates ice up to 1.25 inches in diameter pelted roofs and automobiles. Dark oranges bands show hail more than 1.75 inches making landfall. But the purple section near St. Cloud points to hailstones the size of tennis balls, causing roof damage. The light gray covering much of the region highlights powerful gusts. The darker sections extending over Alexandria show the tornado-strength winds that pushed over tractor-trailers and tasked property owners with finding an emergency roofer to secure buildings.

Hail & Wind Map, St. Cloud, Minnesota, May 12, 2022

Hail and wind storm images and videos have been posted on social media:

The National Weather Service high wind, tornado, and hail damage map shows a massive cluster of storms over Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and parts of Wisconsin. All told, 17 tornados, 424 high wind incidents, and 108 hailstorms struck neighborhoods and business districts on May 12, 2022. Wide-reaching resources indicate the following Minnesota cities and towns need support from any available roofing & restoration contractor.

  • Avon: Golf ball-sized ice cracked glass and shingles.
  • Collegeville: Ice was reported to be nearly two inches in diameter by residents.
  • Foley: Benton County was not spared from the high wind and hail property damage. Ice balls the size of hen eggs pounded Foley and nearby Gilman.
  • Long Prairie: Areas of Todd County endured toppled trees, power outages, and a barn was reported swept away by high winds or a tornado.
  • Pleasant Lake: Wind gusts reportedly exceeded 60 mph.
  • St. Cloud: Hail as large as golf balls pelted roofs and automobiles before noon. Tree limbs nearly a foot in diameter were snapped like twigs due to wind gusts of 70 mph and higher. Images on Twitter show large trees uprooted along 35th Street just west of Sartell High School.
  • Saint Joseph: Images posted on Twitter indicate golf ball-sized hail blanketed the community.
  • Waite Park: The Stearns County community sustained a pair of ice falls.

Douglas County cities and towns also saw widespread wind damage that involved utility poles bent sideways, broken trees, roof damage to residential and commercial buildings, and doors ripped from structures. Property owners are urged to secure leaks and have a prompt roof inspection conducted for insurance purposes. RestoreMaster commercial roof repair specialists were called to the area on May 11, 2022, in response to the Bow Echo storm that impacted Minneapolis.

Strong winds can rip open some roofing systems and cause severe roof wind damage.

Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds.

Roof damage can be severe or mild, depending on various factors which include: materials used on the roof, impact of debris, building height and proximity to other buildings, age, angle and shape of the roof and type of roofing.

Getting a roof inspection & property damage assessment after severe weather like this is important for determining whether you need to address roof damage from hail or high winds.

In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map.

Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.

And insurance companies sometimes enforce deadlines for claims, so you need to get your claim filed quickly.
