Jun 8, 2022

Two to three-inch hailstones dropped with torrential rains and high wind all throughout Southwest Nebraska, as part of a system of storms that harried residents and business owners living and working in their path. Roofs were destroyed, and windows were broken. According to Imperial Republican News, 30-year roofs that were replaced in 2019 due to destructive storms that occurred in September, now have about a 20-year life, but most roofs are being totaled.

Nebraska has a lot of farming communities, and crops were damaged in Chase County, which makes it hard on farmers, as they have a very small window of time to decide to replant. Planting has time periods in order for crops to grow and produce within the growing season. The time period for planting in Nebraska is closing soon.

With so much roof damage, RestoreMaster encourages residential and commercial property owners to take advantage of their free roof inspections, in order to get the best coverage from insurance companies.

The local hail and wind map indicates high wind overlapping in some areas where hail fell which can create a greater impact of hail on roofs and sidings. Light gray areas indicate winds up to 58 – 73 mph, and indigo indicates winds up to 95 mph. Hail up to 1 ¼” is indicated by yellow and orange to dark orange from 1.25 to 2.5”.

RestoreMaster has been in the area, providing assistance with emergency temporary repairs and insurance claim filing by assisting with roof inspections.

Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems.

Some older roofs can sustain damage from only 50 mph winds.

The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

Getting a roof inspection & property damage assessment after severe weather like this is important for determining whether you need to address roof damage from hail or high winds.

If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.

Get your roof inspected, even if you think there is no problem, especially if your property falls anywhere within the area of the hail and wind damage map.

Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.

And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
