Emergency Roof Repair Underway After Amarillo, Texas Panhandle Suffer Devastating High Wind & Hail Damage on Sunday, May 1, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
High winds and ice the size of baseballs left a wake of property damage in Amarillo and across the Texas Panhandle on Sunday, May 1st. RestoreMaster issued an alert to every available roofing contractor to lend support as property owners require immediate roof leak repair before another storm rolls through the region.
According to ABC 7 News, multiple reports of baseball-sized ice stones caused widespread hail property damage to rooftops, siding, and automobile windshields. Although the highest intensity segments of the hail and windstorms narrowly missed downtown Amarillo, the surrounding area took devastation from both high winds and large ice strikes.
“A semi was also blown over along I-40 where winds gusted between 70-86 mph. A wind gust of 86 mph was observed by a west Texas mesonet site 15 miles NW of downtown Amarillo as this storm moved through Bishop Hills where additional baseball size hail was reported,” ABC 7 News reported. “Several reports of baseball size hail were noted in Hereford, Texas, which caused widespread damage in town. Winds and siding on homes were destroyed by those wind-driven hailstones, and there were several power lines blown over as well.”
A local hailstorm damage map shows multiple hailstorms overlapping each other and battering communities. The yellow sections highlight ice up to 1.25 inches in diameter, pelting places such as south Dalhart along Highway 87 and Washburn to the east of Amarillo. The orange bands indicate hail upwards of 1.75 inches around, with the darker orange showing ice as large as 2.5 inches striking residential and commercial roofs. But the purple clusters indicate hail larger than baseballs hammered neighborhoods and business centers outside Amarillo, inflicting the worst hail property damage on Sunday, May 1st, and overnight into Monday morning.

The National Weather Service tornado, high wind, and hailstorm damage map shows severe weather events across the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, and a smaller cluster of East Coast storms centered in North Carolina. The national reporting center confirmed four tornados, 60 high wind incidents, and 138 hail sightings on Sunday, May 1st, 2022. The greater Amarillo area sustained among the worst high wind and hail damage to roofing systems including the following.
- Amarillo: Wide-reaching areas were severely affected by hail as upwards of 10 icefall incidents pounded Potter County Sunday evening and into Monday. Ice larger than baseballs battered commercial rooftops and shattered exposed windshields.
- Deaf Smith County: Residential and commercial buildings sustained hard impacts in Adrian, Broadview, and Hereford. The largest reported ice was 2.5 inches in diameter, and it punched holes in structures. Hereford reportedly suffered extreme winds that tore siding and roof sections apart.
- Dumas: Moore County property owners suffered hits from ice the size of golf balls around midnight, carrying into Monday morning.
- Sanford: Hail blanketed the small town east of the Canadian River.
- Stinnett: Ice stones as large as golf balls pelted the Hutchinson County community, causing substantial hail roof damage after 8 pm. Torrential rains resulted in temporary flooding.
The Texas Panhandle can expect another wave of heavy rain that could exacerbate commercial property damage. Building owners are urged to make prompt roof leak repair efforts to avoid further losses. RestoreMaster recently called on emergency roofing specialists to aid property owners in Central Oklahoma after hail and high winds damaged roofs on Saturday, April 23, 2022.
Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems.
Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged.
Several factors will determine the severity of roof damage: the height of the building and proximity to nearby structures, the quality of work by the original installers, the shape and angle of the roof, the age and type of roofing materials, and the impact from debris.
It’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment following severe weather like this so that you can determine whether you have roof damage from hail or high winds.
If roof leaks are a problem, they need to be addressed immediately. Experienced roofing contractors can either cover the affected area (or the entire roof) with a tarp or with a durable shrink wrap plastic membrane until long-term repairs can be made. Preventing water intrusion will help stop mold from growing.
If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged.
Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.
And deadlines from insurance companies could hinder you from filing a claim later.
