Disaster Response Team

Apr 24, 2022

A menacing storm front trekked across Central Oklahoma on Saturday, April 23rd, as high winds and hail property damage were inflicted across the region. RestoreMaster apprised commercial roof repair contractors to lend support before heavy rains soak vulnerable buildings.

Based on Oklahoma Gas and Electric’s system watch, more than 4,000 residential and commercial buildings lost power on Saturday night, with 1,100 customers in the Oklahoma City Metro area experiencing service disruptions into Sunday. Reports indicate a funnel cloud touched down near Tuttle and cut a path as long as four miles while causing roof wind damage. First-hand accounts also indicate a twister may have briefly made ground fall near Tinker Air Force Base, according to News 9.

A local hailstorm damage map shows at least four storms moving through Central Oklahoma, with the largest spanning from the eastern Gracemont to south Spencer. Another severe weather concentration hovered to the north and southwest of El Reno. To the south, Slaughterville was pelted by a fast-moving hail event. The long yellow bands on the local hail and roof wind damage map show ice balls up to 1.25 inches striking neighborhoods and business areas. The light orange indicates ice up to 1.75 inches pounding cars, trucks, and buildings. The dark orange hovering around Grady County points to emergency roof repairs being needed as ice stones the size of tennis balls battered buildings.

Wind & Hail Map Central Oklahoma - April 23, 2022

Damage brought about by hail and high wind throughout Central Oklahoma is reported by citizens and news centers on social media.

The National Weather Service wind and hailstorm damage map shows severe weather events stretching across Central Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Southeast Minnesota. All told, four tornados, 59 high wind incidents, and 19 hailstorms devastated residential and commercial properties on Saturday, April 23rd. Wide-reaching reports indicate the following communities suffered significant losses.

  • Canadian County: Areas along I-40 between El Reno and Calumet experienced hail the size of a quarter pelt automobiles and buildings.
  • Garvin County: Strong winds tore the rooftops of commercial and residential structures. Immediate roof leak repair was needed as rain clouds approached Central Oklahoma.
  • Minco: The town saw ice as large as tennis balls batter windshields and rooftops.
  • Norman: The northern outskirts of the community, as well as Newcastle and Hall Park, took hits as ice of nearly two inches in diameter fell.
  • Oklahoma City: The largest hailstorm dumped ice on metro business centers, including suburbs such as Del City, Smith Village, Midwest City, and the Will Rogers World Airport. Early incident reports tallied as many as three utility poles dropped by high winds.
  • Slaughterville: The Cleveland County region saw a lone hailstorm deliver quarter-sized ice across I-35 and beyond the Lexington Wildlife Management Area.
  • Tinker Airforce Base: High winds down a utility pole between Douglas and Post roads.
  • Union City: One-inch hail peppered properties as a sheet of frozen precipitation blanked the community.

Widespread power outages, impacted buildings, and approaching rain prompted Oklahoma City officials to postpone events such as the Memorial Marathon scheduled for Sunday, April 24. The hail season typically runs through May in the Sooner State, accompanied by torrential rains and high winds. Property owners are urged to make commercial roof repair arrangements before water infiltrates buildings and creates hazardous mold growths. RestoreMaster recently dispatched emergency roofing contractors to Central Arkansas after Little Rock was pummeled by hail and tornadoes on April 11, 2022.

Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems.

Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour.

The intensity of roof damage is determined by various factors: the velocity and impact of flying debris, the quality of the original installation, the building height and location in relation to other buildings, the angle and shape of the roof, and the material used on the roof.

After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system.

In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.

Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map.

Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.

And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
