Roof Contractor Arrives To Repair Damage From High Winds, Tornado & Hail, In Southern Indiana on May 19, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Southern Indiana was hit with hail the size of baseballs, heavy winds, and a tornado, on Thursday, May 19th early in the afternoon. According to a local news report, areas like Poseyville and Wadesville, Indiana had hail at about 2.75”. (Without wind, this size of hail can be dropping at 40-70 mph.) Vehicles in the parking lot at North Posey High School had broken windshields and other damage. The students said it sounded like a team of people were running on the roof of the school building. A lot of damage occurred on roofs and sidings.
An EF-2 tornado landed in Wabash County, Illinois at 9:30 pm, producing significant damage through the Mt. Carmel, Illinois area then straddled the White River and blew through the Gibson/Knox County line in Indiana. Trees were uprooted and snapped and then thrown onto homes. Dozens of power poles were snapped and structural damage occurred to buildings.
This storm was in conjunction with many other storms that occurred on May 19th, like the one in St. Paul, Minnesota, where teacup-sized hailstones slammed the area.
Contractors from RestoreMaster have been dispatched to the area to assess the damage, help file damage reports to insurance companies and implement emergency remediation, by covering roofs with shrink wrap or tarp, until more permanent solutions can be had. After storms such as this, it is imperative to get damaged buildings covered quickly, in order to prevent water damage from future storms.
The local hail storm map indicates large swaths of heavy wind (light gray), with a tornado (black streak) starting in Illinois and ending in Gibson/Knox County, Indiana. Hail up to 1” predominated, as indicated by yellow swaths. The purple area indicates where the baseball-sized hail fell near Posey and Lawrence.

With damage from trees and branches, and hail the size of baseballs dropping at 40-70 mph, with heavy winds propelling them against homes, buildings, and roofing systems, RestoreMaster has a lot of work ahead, to help property owners restore their buildings to pre-storm condition.
Tornadoes, hail, and even strong winds can cause severe wind damage to roofing systems.
Winds as low as 50 mph can cause some older roofs to be damaged.
The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
Following severe weather like this, it’s important to get a thorough roof inspection & property damage assessment to determine whether or not you have roof damage from hail or wind.
In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.
If your property was anywhere within the storm damage map, it would be best to get your roof inspected, even if you think your roof was not damaged.
Many storm damage symptoms are not always evident immediately.
And insurance companies sometimes enforce deadlines for claims, so you need to get your claim filed quickly.
