Roofing Contractor Deployed To Central Jersey & Philadelphia, PA Area Due To Tennis Ball-Sized Hail, on May 20, 2022
Commercial Roofing & Restoration
Friday, May 20th brought about heavy thunderstorms to the Philadelphia area, extending across the border to New Jersey. According to nj.com, hail measuring 2.5” in diameter, the size of a tennis ball dropped in Burlington County. Nearby, there was another storm a few days ago, with teacup-sized hail (3" in diameter), in Maryland & Delaware area, on May 16th. The winds were up to 70 miles per hour during that storm.
Additionally, Camden County and Burlington County saw ping pong-ball-sized stones. Tennis ball-sized hail is rare in New Jersey. There was a tornado watch for 13 counties and a brief EF-0 tornado in Hazlet Township in the evening. Fortunately, there was no more severe tornadic activity, which could be devastating in a densely populated area such as New Jersey.
RestoreMaster contractors were sent to the area to assist with assessing roof damage. Hail at the size of a tennis ball falls at 44 - 72 mph, with no wind to propel it causes significant damage. This type of hail can break ceramic roof tiles, chip and crack asphalt tiles, dent and damage gutters, crack windows, and wreak havoc on sidings. Even small hail propelled in high winds can create damage.
The local hail and storm map indicates up to 2.5” hailstones indicated by dark orange. Varied size hail from 1” (yellow) to 1.75” (orange) pelted various areas around Pennsylvania, PA across the border to New Jersey’s Camden and Burlington County.
Hail in the range of tennis ball size is rare in New Jersey, so local social media blew up with images and videos of the storm:

They will be with their clients from assessment to final repairs, bringing the damaged property back to pre-storm condition, and better.
Severe storms, bringing hail, strong winds, or tornadoes can cause severe roof damage, by ripping off roofing systems.
Some older roofs can be damaged by winds as low as 50 miles per hour.
The severity of roof damage depends on several factors including: type and age of roofing materials, presence of flying debris, roof shape and angle, building height and proximity to adjacent structures and the quality of original roof installation.
After a severe storm of hail or high winds, it is important to get your roof inspected, and have a property damage assessment report so that you can learn whether you have damage to your roofing system.
In situations where you’ve got a leaking roof, experienced disaster roofing contractors can stop the leaks temporarily, by laying tarp or by using a durable shrink-wrap plastic membrane in the affected areas, or even over the entire roof. This will keep your building protected until permanent repairs can take place. This will help prevent mold infestation from water leaks.
Even if you don’t think your roof was damaged, you will want to get your roof inspected if your property falls anywhere within the hail damage map.
Some storm damage problems do not produce symptoms right away.
And insurance company deadlines could hinder your ability to file a claim later.
Commercial property owners can depend on RestoreMaster emergency response crews to assist them with catastrophic roof damage, siding and window damage, frozen pipe damage, and turnkey restoration services.
